Our flexible working policy enables all full-time employees to work up to 2 days a week from home as work permits.  POSITION SUMMARY  As part of our strategy for growth in the UK, we are expanding our physics team and recruiting an experimental AMO Physicist to join our quantum RF team. In this role, you will actively contribute to ongoing research & development projects and assist in the exploration of new concepts and approaches for future quantum RF sensor systems. Working closely with a team of physicists and engineers, you will play a vital role in the collaborative efforts of the team.  JOB RESPONSIBILITIES   Project Support   Translate product requirements into atomic system designs.   Execute modelling, simulation, and analytical calculations to design systems required to meet product performance.  Design and execute testing and verification plans.   Integrate complex opto-mechanical systems, electronics, and software into quantum devices.   Perform technical tasks needed for the success of the project from equipment setup to system demonstration.  Identify materials and components to meet project requirements.  Document project progress and identify, track and resolve any project issues.  Team Collaboration   Work collaboratively with team members against tight deadlines.  Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams to develop commercial and non-commercial products and/or draft new quantum-led projects.   Comfortable working in a fast-paced, evolving environment where priorities may shift based on project needs and technological advancements.  Open to learning new techniques, integrating feedback, and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to navigate ambiguity effectively.  Ability to assess complex situations, adapt quickly, and make informed decisions under uncertainty.  Stakeholder Engagement   Contribute to external reports and publications, author/co-author papers, proposals, presentations and reports, give invited talks, attend project workshops and conferences. Explain and present complex quantum systems to internal and external stakeholders with a wide range of technical and non-technical backgrounds.  Requirements What you will bring to the team:   Entrepreneurial drive, intellectual agility and personal eagerness to develop with the needs of the business  Good verbal and written communication skills, able to effectively share information with technical and non-technical staff, both in writing and orally  Good collaboration skills, able to work in a team environment where engagement and participation are an expected part of successful job performance.    Technical Knowledge   PhD in experimental atomic, molecular, and optical (AMO) physics  Rydberg physics and their interactions, particularly when applied to Rydberg-atom electrometry   Working knowledge of control systems and signal processing  Proficiency in a programming language (e.g. Python, Rust, C++) Ability to problem-solve and debug complex systems comprised of optics, analogue and digital electronics, software and quantum devices  Experience   Experience working with laser systems; optical design, alignment, and control  Demonstrable laboratory experience with atomic and molecular physics experiments Proven track record of integrating complex hardware and software into systems  Familiarity with mechanical, optical, and electronic design packages (e.g. Solidworks, Zemax, Altium)   Prior experience in project management is a plus.   Understanding of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) practices and modeling workplace safety culture.    WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS   Work will normally be performed in an office and laboratory environment and around technical equipment including computers and lasers.  Able to sit, stand, bend, lift and carry up to 15 kg without assistance.  Able to efficiently use automated office equipment such as laptops, copiers, and printers; able to effectively engage in communications (via phone, computer, or in-person). As a Control Systems Engineer, you will employ your analytical and problem-solving skills to contribute to the design, implementation, and operation of atom-based quantum technologies, primarily on quantum RF sensors, but also encompassing inertial navigation systems and atomic clocks. JOB RESPONSIBILITIES The duties and responsibilities outlined below include essential functions of the role. Depending on business needs, this role may perform a combination of some or all of the following duties. Duties, responsibilities, and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned at any time with or without notice. Collaborate seamlessly with a multidisciplinary team to orchestrate the development of atom-based quantum technologies, with a focus on quantum RF sensors and atomic clocks. Engineer electronic solutions tailored for controlling subsystems, such as laser and optical frequency comb drivers, optical and electronic amplifiers, photodetectors, thermal sensors, and RF signal chains. Implement real-time and pipelined digital signal processing (DSP) algorithms on high-speed signals within an FPGA including FIR/IIR filters, I/Q frequency mixers, and similar. Writing automated test benches to verify designs. Debug of complex embedded systems comprising hardware, software (processor) and firmware (FPGA) designs. Create high speed interfaces from FPGA to hardware peripherals such as ADCs, DACs, DDS, PLL and other devices. Execute high-speed feedback control systems (PID and similar) on an FPGA. Collaborate closely with software, electronics and systems engineers to design and realise new FPGA-based peripherals. Employ precision test and measurement equipment to characterize and test systems. Conduct critical design reviews based on product specifications. Create, document, and maintain designs and architectural blueprints. Effectively manage technical priorities, meet deadlines, and deliver on project objectives. Requirements Significant experience working in engineering, computer science, or a related field. Proficiency in implementing DSP algorithms, digital transceivers, and control loops on FPGAs using VHDL/Verilog/System Verilog. Ability to analyse solutions and make prototype design trade-offs. Strong desire to dive deep into system level issues and drive problems to closure in a team-based environment with a proactive attitude. In-depth knowledge and understanding of digital and RF hardware, including its limitations and its impact on system performance. Competence in controlling FPGA IP blocks programmatically via software, through e.g. AXI bus. Proficiency in interfacing with peripheral hardware devices through standard communication protocols such as I2C, SPI, UART, and others. Experience in hardware product development, new product introduction, and familiarity with Product Life Cycle processes. Hands-on experience with electrical test, verification, and validation of products and subsystems. Desirable Skills or Knowledge Experience of developing with FPGA SoC/SoM devices such as Xilinx Zynq. Experience with Xilinx RFSoCs highly advantageous. Experience in designing for Radio Frequency products and experience using associated test equipment such as RF Signal Generators, Spectrum Analysers, Network Analysers. POSITION SUMMARY The Portfolio Technical Lead (PTL) plays a substantial strategic role when determining, with other Infleqtion strategic leaders, what technologies and prototypes are transitioned from research to products. This role is responsible for managing the atomic clock technical team to deliver excellence in R&D outcomes and being a key contributor to bringing our technology to deliverable products.
