In Britain, the average temperature in January will be lower than in July. Sometimes we can predict confidently if we assume certain conditions that are quite likely to be fulfilled: if the weather stays within a reasonably broad range and there are no diseases, crops will grow well. But sometimes we can have no confidence that important conditions will be fulfilled: if consumers like this new product, it will be profitable, but we have little idea of whether consumers will like it. And sometimes we cannot even formulate conditions that are independent of the prediction: \"if people are keen to buy shares, the stock market index will go up\" is no more helpful as a guide to action than \"maybe the index will go up\".\n\nA power of foresight looks as though it would be very useful. We could take the right precautions against the effects of forthcoming adverse weather or crop diseases. We could make the right new products, increasing consumer satisfaction and the happiness of the population. We could take the right bets on the stock market, or on horses. We might even arrange our personal relationships to make our lives and the lives of others more satisfactory overall. But would a power to foresee really be such a good thing?\n\nFor the weather and new products, it looks as though it would be. We have put a lot of effort into forecasting, and the overall effect on human happiness is very likely to have been positive.\n\nFor the stock market and horses, a power of foresight would be of immense value to a few people who possessed it so long as other people did not. But if everybody had the power, nobody would make any great profits.\n\nNow suppose that we all had the power of foresight in relation to all aspects of life. We might avoid some big blunders, but there would be risks.\n\nWe might not do all sorts of exciting and rewarding things because we paid too much attention to the foreseen downsides and not enough to the foreseen benefits.\n\nKnowing how someone else would react to given circumstances would approach knowing what they were thinking. And sometimes we really don't want to know that. \"He would insult me if we happened to meet at a party\" implies \"He does not like me\", and ignorance of that might have been bliss.\n\nCreativity might be greatly diminished. If we know what is going to happen, working out the best thing to do becomes like answering a carefully stated examination question. It is when we are caught out by the entirely unexpected that we can really shine.\n\nFinally, would anything close to perfect foresight even be possible? Two obstacles are these:\n\nWe cannot know what the next scientific discoveries will be, and therefore cannot know how significant they will be.\n\nPrediction would need to include predicting what people will do. But once people can foresee what will happen, and know that others can predict what they will do, they will change their conduct. We point to the the things that differentiate ourselves from other creatures, and may claim this is a difference of degree or a difference of kind.\n\nExamples of such differences include:\n\n* abstract thought and reasoning\n* complex language\n* self-awareness and consciousness\n* society, culture and technology\n* environmental control\n\nOthers say that what makes us special is the fact that we may be the only example of 'intelligent life' in the universe. That gives us significance at a cosmic scale.\n\nThose who claim a difference of kind say that the gap between ourselves and our next nearest relatives, the great apes, is so vast that it's not just a matter of degree, and that matters. (That gap may exist because other hominids have disappeared, having been assimilated or out-competed by homo sapiens.)\n\nClearly, these abilities have allowed us to compete for resources, thrive, and develop in ways and to a degree that other species haven't. We look at ourselves and see special features that we don't see in other creatures.\n\nFurther, we seem to claim that these abilities give us certain moral rights to control and exploit other creatures and the wider environment. Even within humankind, over the arc of history some humans have claimed a right to exercise these powers over other humans, because they differ by sex, race or some other characteristic that we think significant.\n\nBut our claim to being exceptional can be challenged. The advantages we point to seem important to us because they are the things that we value or have helped us thrive and survive. They are important because they are important to us.\n\nReligious faith isn't much help here, or at least in some interpretations. In the book of Genesis, God gives humanity \"dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth\". Whether the word \"dominion\" should be interpreted as authority and control, or as responsibility and stewardship, is unclear and a matter for conjecture.\n\nPerhaps it is perfectly reasonable that we should exploit our abilities to compete for finite resources to the advantage of our species. After all, we think it perfectly reasonable to prefer the rights of our nearest and dearest over people in the next town or country, all other things being equal. Peter Singer might disagree though.\n\nWhat would an 'ideal' dispassionate observer - with no no skin in game, so to speak - think ? Would they agree with our evaluation and that the things we find important are in fact important and a moral basis for our actions ? Or would they say that the stuff ants do is just as valuable ?\n\nWe could imagine being visited by a race of aliens, superior in intelligence but benign towards us. Would they allow us to carry on as we are, or with their exceptional abilities and 'knowing better' than us, might they treat us as pets or cattle with fewer moral rights ?\n\nAre we just being hubristic in our self-importance ? Or are we doing what any other species would do, if the tables were turned ? Perhaps we are justified in claiming some moral authority over other creatures - as human parents do over their children - but should just act more wisely.\n\nYou might find this lecture by Bernard Williams useful and thought provoking. By many accounts, it has the potential to change how we live and for some, it threatens their very existence, at least where they live now. Yet we do disagree, about its existence or its possible effects on our lives and those of future people. Why is this?\n\nFor those who deny its existence, it may be because they distrust science itself, the data or the scientific basis on which various predications have been made. Or they may distrust the claimed agendas of those who are warning us.\n\nSome may have their heads in the sand, perhaps because the possible outcomes are too frightening to contemplate. Some others may simple believe it's too late to change anything meaningfully, so we may as well enjoy what time we have left. Others still may see the changes we are being asked to make as a threat to their livelihood or political influence and resist accordingly.\n\nOne problem is that we disagree on what the term 'climate change' actually means. Ask ten people to define it and you'll get at least eleven answers. This is understandable.
